Let me make it simple and easy to understand:
Step 1 : Load the jquery script file, as below:

Step 2 : Copy the jquery script to a folder named script inside the theme folder.
Step 3 : Register jquery it the site head, as below:

$j = jQuery.noConflict();
$j(document).ready(function() {
alert(‘jQuery is enabled’);
});
</script>
Step 4 : Start using $j and not $.
Voila! your blogEngine now starts taking jQuery and what more.. its plugins too..

When I try to save a page with these things like data-role=”content” gets removed for some reason
If the page use the data-role markup for some purpose, it is better not to touch it. Instead you can use some other markup like “data-customrole”

One important note: In case if you are getting ‘jQuery not defined’ javascript error, it can be due to the following factors:
1. jquery file is corrupted. Download a proper one.
2. jquery file needs to be placed in the root folder of the site
3. You have not published the site.
